Share 6 – POWER 4.11.19

Published: December 3, 2019

On the 4th November 2019, we were joined by 6 amazing speakers from different creative industries that spoke on the theme of ‘POWER’.

https://blickstudios.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Share-6-Overview-of-event.mp4

The theme for this year is ‘POWER’ and the word has its intricacies have so much sway on our personal and professional lives. Power can be seen as positive or negative. Power can be a constant struggle or it can be delicately shared. Power can be a responsibility that some of us wish we had, or a stronghold we wish others didn’t. Its dynamic is an integral part of the design industry today, and it is why we’re excited to be exploring this theme for Belfast Design Week 2019.

We got to hear about what ‘POWER’ meant to each individual and how it plays a role in their life personally & professionally.

We started off with Lucinda Graham who is a recent Fashion graduate from University of Ulster and she spoke about the current transition that she is experiencing post university. She described that there are different ways to interpret the word ‘POWER’ and how there is power in taking care of yourself, your mental health and going back to basics.

Our next speaker was Rachel O’Grady who is a lecturer at Queen’s University Belfast and the co-founder of OGU Architects. Rachel’s work concentrates on small, collaborative and prototypical structures that are designed through a process of seeking common ground between participants.

She spoke about the power of small projects to create a larger conversation about different issues. She walked us through the different projects that she has worked on in India & Northern Ireland, creating a link between the two places and what we can learn about POWER through conversation & brining communities together.

To check out her work, visit : www.oguarchitects.com/

Our next speaker that we had was Liam O’Neill who is currently working for Kaffe O, a Scandinavian inspired coffee brand with 3 locations in Belfast. He is Head of Coffee/Marketing, along with managing the City Centre location.

He spoke about acknowledging the power that we all possess from within in, that we get to decide how to create power within ourselves and rewrite our own ending on how we live our life. To not be held back by our background, gender, race but to take accountability to be empowered within ourselves.

https://blickstudios.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Liam-ONeill.mp4

Our next speaker was Hannah Sharp who is a Graduate User Designer at Kainos who loves creating designs that make a difference. As a recent graduate of Interaction Design at Belfast School of Art, she really enjoys sharing experiences and knowledge from her own journey into the design industry.

This year, Hannah created “Make Your Mark”, a crowd-funded and self-published book highlighting the amazing women who are working in design and tech right now.

In this talk she spoke about what empowerment is, and how her project inspired her to understand how empowerment can transfer between stories and people.

https://blickstudios.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Hannah-Sharp.mp4

Our next speaker was Mel Wiggins who is an activist, writer, coach and community leader currently living in Portadown with her husband and two small children. Since 2011, Mel has been coordinating a local community project called ‘Freedom Acts’; working to prevent people being exploited or trafficked here in Northern Ireland and inform policy at a Governmental level in NI and the UK.

In her talk she talked about how ‘power’ has a negative connotation in relation to politics but wanted to share how power can transform and shift in way where people can be who they truly are.

https://blickstudios.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Mel-Wiggins.mp4

Our last speaker was Jamie Beard (née: Baird) who is a Northern Irish illustrator based in Belfast, represented by UsFolk agency. His work, primarily centred around portraiture, is perpetually fuelled by a fascination with people and their stories, and notions of individuals and collective identity.

Much of his noted work to date has been rooted in Belfast’s luminous LGBTQ+ community, aiming in some sense to convey a portrait of a community through the people and stories making it up. Stylistically and thematically, Jamie’s work is driven by a Venn diagram between folk art, kitsch and queer, coated in a haze of 20th century pop culture.

In his talk he shared his process of how he works creatively, what projects he has worked on over the last 5 years, and how he has found power in the LGBTQ+ community in Belfast. He describes the process of what power meant to him being an artists and being passionate about communicating it in his own visual way.

Belfast Plant Stories - How Taking Care of Plants Makes You Feel

We asked the people of Belfast how taking care of a living green thing changes their mood and makes them feel

How the idea for Belfast Community Plant Library came about after @karishmasworld and I (Christine) visited Hong Kong in 2024 to create a @belfastdesignwk design installation for the British Council Spark Festival.

When we were in Hong Kong we got a last minute invite to visit Alan Cheung in the beautiful @onebite.design studio and saw their Community Plant Library outside and instantly loved the idea of bringing something similar to Belfast.

As a follow on to our recent Grow Your Own Way project that was all about bringing designers and growers together to explore the potential of supporting residents in Belfast’s Botanic and Holylands areas to grow their own food within the city to improve their health and wellbeing.

We also thought the Plant Library was a great accessible, welcoming intervention that used plants to create new opportunities for interaction and improving wellbeing in the city and thought it would translate very well to Belfast.

We kept in touch and in 2025 Alan and his business partner Sarah Mui visited Belfast then later that year we worked together on our Islands of Design project for Irish Design Week, before finally in 2026 we have found the opportunity thanks to support from Belfast City Council to bring the project to Belfast at our next Design After Dark event during Culture Night on Friday 18th September where we will be at Bankmore Square from 4 - 10pm with lots of plant and design related activities including:

- See and interact with our plant library, bringing and taking away plants

- Share your plant stories and wishes and ideas for a greener Belfast

- Learn about how to care for and grow your own edible plants with our plant expert Jilly Dougan

- Learn how to make your own mini planters with Green: Remake

- Pick up a Belfast Plant Map and Zine, as well as some seeds and planting materials

And much more

This is a free drop-in event, just pop by and say hello!

Community Plant Library - Belfast Plant Stories

Exploring Belfast’s relationship with plant life and place through the plant stories of the local community. Plants in some shape or form are an important part of life for most people. Forming some of our earliest memories, helping the environment and positively impacting our health and wellbeing.

As part of the Community Plant Library project we have collected personal plant stories from people across Belfast to explore the different ways plants connect with our lives. On the run up to the event on Culture Night we will be sharing out some of these stories. Starting today by sharing the stories of some of the people from Belfast and why they love plants!

If you love plants let us know why?

- - Meet The New Design Hothouse Resident: Beth Schmidt - -

In our latest Meet The Resident we get to know the second of our new Design Hothouse residents @beth__schmidt who is currently working as an architectural assistant @studioidir in East Belfast

Tell us a bit about yourself, your background and your creative work?

I work as an architectural assistant at Studio idir in East Belfast, where I contribute to a range of residential and placemaking projects. My work is driven by a passion for community-led design and an interest in re-evaluating food and waste systems, which was a continuous theme throughout my academic work. After graduating from Queen’s University Belfast in 2024, I spent time volunteering for various community-led projects across Europe, engaging in hands-on construction, food preparation, and permaculture farming. This allowed me to create meaningful change on an everyday scale, which I think can be difficult within architectural practice.

Can you tell us why you wanted to take part in the residency

I’m interested in the potential of design in reshaping our cities, which the residency encourages us to explore. The collaborative nature of the project was also important to me – I come from a background of architecture, which is often a very individualistic discipline. Buildings have historically been portrayed as the work and genius of one person, rather than reflecting the vast range of people involved in design and construction processes. I think collaboration enriches design and creates better results, and so I was interested in the opportunity to work with designers from other disciplines throughout the residency.

What would you like to achieve from this residency?

I’d like to explore design within circular economy principles, and create a body of work that is genuinely sustainable and has a positive contribution to the public. I’m also eager to gain experience and insight more generally in delivering the various events, branding, and physical exhibition that the residency links into. Lastly, I’d also like to become more confident in my ability to work within these areas going forward

Design Hothouse Residency Week 2

Productive second week of our new Belfast Design Week collaborative Design Hothouse Residency. Starting with an interpreting the brief workshop on Monday morning with the brilliant David Woods from Bag of Bees Studio which was so good we forgot to take any photos. Then a city walk and exhibition site visit on Tuesday evening. Before finishing on Friday with a session on moodboarding, concept generation and ideation.
