Collaboration
Last week at Blick we hosted 2 great collaborative events. The Womenfolk Breakfast event on Monday morning with She Said Design and The Time is Now event on Tuesday evening with Creating a Space . Collaboration has always been important to us at Blick. It is at the very heart of what we do (the original idea for Blick was formed collectively by a group of creative entrepreneurs) and one of our goals within our space is to encourage collaboration amongst our creative residents. Most of our current projects are collaborative including Belfast Design Week and Small Town Big Dreams Podcast.
The benefits of collaboration.
For us collaboration and working with others is a great way to come up with new ideas and get them off the ground. Working with like-minded people with differing skill sets allows projects that would otherwise be impossible to become a reality. Working collaboratively helps us to reach new audiences, learn new skills and gain new viewpoints and gives us the confidence to try out new projects and ideas (with a bit of moral support from the other collaborators) and has been a brilliant way for us to build our network and community and make some really good friends along the way.
Our top 6 tips for getting involved with creative collaborative projects.
If you are interested in getting involved with creative collaborative projects but don’t know where to start our top 6 tips would be to:
1. Go to creative industry events and meet ups and do your best to meet and connect with new like-minded people (e.g. Design Salon, Games NI, Belfast Design Week, Global Shapers, Creating a Space, Melt Collective)
2. Try to connect with people at a similar stage of their business or career – this is often more successful as you will generally have similar drives, goals and ambitions.
3. Seek out and say yes to opportunities – volunteering, speaking at events, taking part in exhibitions anything that comes along, this will build your skills as well as your network
4. Build your profile online and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and reach out and connect with like-minded creatives on social media (There are several creative FB groups including Design Salon, Womenfolk, Ladies Wine & Design, Firsty, Derry Creatives and loads of other business and local interest groups that may be useful)
5. Try to get to know like-minded people from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines – one of the best things about creative collaboration is learning from others and a variety of skills and viewpoints will generally build a stronger team, with more innovative and original ideas and stronger skillset
6. Take time to get to know people you want to work with. Discover their strengths and weaknesses, build trust and develop a common vision.
