An Interview with Jaume Giralt of Desde Studio
Jaume is the founder of Desde Studio, a design studio that specialises in visual and user interface design, branding and web development. We caught up with him to tell us more about his business and about his relocation from Spain to London, and then to Belfast.
Tell us a bit about Desde Studio
I work with companies, startups, organisations and individuals around the world, as well as some self-initiated projects.
Desde means “from” in Spanish. I like to travel a lot and luckily I can work from anywhere. Last year I decided to accept remote work only, and that’s when I set up Desde. I hate the buzzword “digital nomad”, so I’d rather compare Desde to a circus, just without the death defying stunts. Although last minute deadlines certainly feel like it!
You recently moved to Northern Ireland, how was the move and are there any big differences you’ve noticed between Belfast and your previous home?
I lived in London for over 6 years, and although I go back often and most of my clients are still there, being a remote business means I can avoid the tube and the grumpy commuters!
Coming to Northern Ireland was a great decision. After struggling with the accent -and wee local phrases- for the first few weeks, I feel much more settled. Everyone is so welcoming and friendly, and that reminds me of home. There’s also a growing art and design scene, and I believe the city will become an increasingly popular creative hub in the next few years.
What projects are you currently working on with Desde Studio?
I’m currently working with a mental health charity in London, and also doing a web redesign for Workshop Makes, a small printing studio based in Belfast. I’m also preparing a coding workshop in Spain at the end of the month.
What’s been the highlight of your career so far?
I have been self-employed for over 10 years now, both in the UK and Spain. I guess the highlight would be surviving all those years without going bankrupt!
A nice moment was when we launched a campaign for a product redesign at Snap a few years ago. It was quite exciting to see a product we built all across London billboards, magazine covers and even the classic red buses!
