An Interview with Gemma O’Neill
Gemma O’Neill is one of our most recent new residents, she has recently moved from her home on the Causeway Coast to Belfast and is based in our Cotton Court studios at Cathedral Quarter. We had a chat to learn more about her style of work and inspiration.
So tell us a bit about yourself and your illustration work.
I’m primarily a children’s book illustrator and author. I graduated from Falmouth University in 2011 with my first book deal, after visiting the Bologna Children’s Book Fair earlier that year. My books have since been published globally and received a few award nominations, which is exciting!
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m currently working on a couple of new picture books, a children’s information book and a project on the Causeway Coast after receiving an award from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland’s Lottery Funds. I’m exhibiting this work at the Puffin Gallery in Ballycastle this summer and hope to sell and exhibit the work further. The Causeway Coast has always been of huge influence in terms of mark marking, colour and the natural theme within my work.
Is there anything else that you create inbetween book illustration/writing?
Yes, I also enjoy creating greetings cards, prints and original artwork.
