2016 Highlights : Looking back at a creative year!
Can you believe it? 2016 is nearly over! We’re looking back at some of our highlights over the past year and toasting to 2017. We hope you have a wonderful year ahead full of new adventures in life and in business and that you enjoy lots of laughs along the way. Here are our top 10 picks of 2016:
- BELFAST DESIGN WEEK
We were delighted to join the team at Belfast Design Week for our 2nd year and contribute to events throughout the week! We covered everything from Design Business Bootcamp with Chris Murphy (pictured) – talking brand, business and startups – to Crafting Collaborations with Craft NI & Tactility Factory – learning about building a brand through collaboration and exporting internationally – to Collectively Speaking at Usfolk -bringing together the collectives in our city.
2. TALKING CREATIVITY IN VIETNAM
As members of the British Council‘s UK Hub Steering Group, we were invited to attend and speak at the Creative Hub-Making Conference in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam in March 2016. We were inspired by the many types of hubs and collectives there – from art collectives and maker spaces to tech hubs.
3. FEATURED IN BRITISH COUNCIL
We were also excited to be featured in December 2016, in the British Council’s Creative Hubs Report as the key agency in Belfast!
4. 25 POP UP
We continued to collaborate on 25 Pop Up and support great local independent designers to raise their profiles in our curated pop up shop in Belfast & Derry-Londonderry. We were excited to be the retail launch-pad of some great new brands including FAWE & A Rose Cast.
5. CELEBRATING YEAR 1 AT EBRINGTON
We were excited to celebrate our first anniversary at our Derry-LD HQ in Ebrington! (Eighty81 Creative Workspace). We have been so fortunate to have supporters in the city, helping spread the word about Blick and joining us for our many workshops and events!
6. HOW WORK WORKS IN SERBIA
We headed off to Belgrade in Serbia in September 2016 for the How Work Works conference. A particular topic of interest was the importance of transforming under-utilised spaces into centres for creativity.
7. ENTREPRENEURS-IN-RESIDENCE
We launched our Blick Graduate Entrepreneurs-In-Residence scheme this year and two winning graudates were Katherine McDonald Illustration and Elix.sr.
8. SHARE 6 ACROSS THE YEAR
We were excited to host lots of brand new and exciting Share 6 topics this year including Handmade in A Digital World & The Tipping Point. We even tested out a new format without Powerpoints or Keynotes!
9. SKILLING UP
We continued our Blick Academy & The Faculty workshops on topics including Street Art, Comedy, Brewing, Magic, Blockprinting, Event Management, Crowdfunding, Making Posies, Stationery, Podcasting and beyond!
10. RESIDENTS’ HIGHLIGHTS
Our biggest highlight – and the reason Blick is here – is for our residents to succeed and build their brands! We chatted with a few of our residents and these were some of their highlights:
Katrina Taggart getting her MFA in Photography and building her brand alongside, Will Thornton moving into our Malone Road Studios, building his business and getting a great work-life balance and Billygoat Entertainment launching their videogame HM Spiffing across the world.
We were also delighted to have Studio Kin photograph at Belfast Design Week and see AppAttic bring in many accolades over the year.
If you’re a resident or startup business doing something creative, don’t forget to send us your new projects, news or anything you would like to highlight in 2017!
Thanks everyone!
