Meet Our Nurture Program Participants: Bethany Millican
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your creative work?
I’m a Belfast-based artist and illustrator, working across a range of traditional and digital mediums. I completed my foundation at Belfast School of Art in 2015, specialising in Printmaking, and I graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2020, with a specialism in Illustration. I love to draw, paint and write. Narrative, emotion and symbolism are key in my work. I seek to portray the familiar with the mysterious, the mundane with the mystical. I’ve illustrated two autobiographical stories from my childhood, one of which will be published next year. I enjoy poster design, which connects me to my passion for live music, and DIY events. A lot of what I do is made to evoke nostalgia, yearning and hope.
Any projects you are currently working on?
I have been creating illustrations of different places where we find water, both natural and artificial. I’m inspired by the spiritual connotations with water, and have been thinking of flow, abundance, and presence . I’ve been experimenting in a digital medium to explore soft textures, and have been driven by my affinity with the colour blue. I’ll be exhibiting this new work at Boundary Taproom, opening on the upcoming Late Night Art East on 12th December. I’m compiling twelve of my water illustrations into a calendar that I will be selling at the event and throughout the month of December.
What are your future hopes and dreams for your creatice practice?
My goal is to develop my committed practice of visual art into a lifelong career. I have always found myself between the lines of fine art and illustration, and rather than feeling I must chose one or the other, I want to thrive as a multidisciplinary. I want to create work that makes people feel connected, whether it’s a single painting, or a story that makes someone say “I feel that way too.”
