Meet Our Nurture Program Participants: Vera Hylands
Can you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your creative work?
My name is Vera Hylands, and I’m a self-taught artist with a background in business and a lifelong passion for creative work. Although I grew up in the bustling city of Moscow, I have always felt most at home in nature, which fuels my artistic vision and drives the messages in my art. Over the years, I’ve worked in digital textile printing, which has given me a unique understanding of how to transform art into tangible items, but ultimately, my love for art and environmental advocacy led me down a new path. After moving to Northern Ireland, I was deeply struck by the country’s natural beauty, alongside a sense of loss due to environmental challenges. I’m now building a creative brand that celebrates Northern Ireland’s landscapes through abstract art, with the specific goal of drawing attention to the need for environmental preservation and restoration. Using mixed media, I aim to capture the spiritual and emotional essence of nature while telling a story about the region’s environmental past, present, and potential future.
Can you tell us about any projects you are currently working on?
Currently, I’m working on a project focused on the importance of woodlands in Northern Ireland and the urgent need for reforestation. I’m developing a series of around twelve abstract artworks that explore the contrast between the beauty of nature and the impact of deforestation. The project employs varied techniques and symbolic imagery, such as dead trees melting downward, forests viewed through broken windows, and shadows of endangered animals. I’m also experimenting with patterns that feature fading flora and fauna, and incorporating contrasting textures like moss and metal to represent the clash between nature and civilization. My intention is to visually express the importance of woodlands while conveying a sense of hope for restoration. Each artwork is designed to spark a connection between the viewer and the natural world, with a narrative rooted in ecological awareness.
What are your hopes and dreams for your creative idea for the future?
My vision is to grow this project into a full-scale creative brand that not only brings attention to the beauty of Northern Ireland’s nature but also actively advocates for its preservation. I hope my work can inspire people to recognize the value of local landscapes and spark conversation around environmental action. Beyond the immediate series on woodlands, I envision creating further collections that address other ecological themes—such as the balance between human development and the natural environment. In addition to exhibiting my art, I’d love to make it accessible to a broader audience through products like hoodies, notebooks, and other items that allow people to carry a reminder of nature with them. I also hope to collaborate with environmental organizations to donate proceeds from my work, creating a meaningful impact beyond art. Ultimately, my goal is to establish a creative brand that merges art, nature, and purpose, bringing environmental awareness into daily life and encouraging collective action for a sustainable future.
