We were thrilled to have 7 local fashion industry speakers join us yesterday evening for Share 6: Fashioning the Future covering the topics of PR, Photography, Process, Studio, Bespoke, Blogging and Accessories. We heard from emerging and established design speakers Jessica Fok, Khara Pringle, Shauna McGowan, Sean Henry, Una Rodden, Karen Flynn & Marie-Claire Ferguson.
Some of the top tips we heard from the evening were:
- fashion in the future is about non-labels, about collaborating and about being able to create customised items
- it can be difficult to specialise in purely fashion and it helps to have a diverse portfolio of work
- experimenting with processes can lead to unexpected new collections
- you can increase control over your creative career if you split the week between a more financially stable choice – be it design or otherwise – to pay the bills which leaves the other half to do whatever you wish!
- bespoke-wear can be bridal but also so much more
- the customer can often dictate the amount of creativity you can infuse into a project
- to become a blogger is simple, but it takes confidence and the ability to express your thoughts openly that helps you become a successful one
- as a self-employed designer, you may find some parts of the year busier than others. Save during the busy times to make the lighter times comfortable financially.
- look outside of Belfast for new markets and inspiration
- you can be both an artist and a designer – that’s the beauty of being a creative!
We also chatted with our audience members who are involved in exciting new startup ventures! If you joined us, we hope you enjoyed the event. Our event next week is perfect for you if you’re a designer looking to cost your products. It’s Pricing Your Work with Trish Belford and you can book it here.
