Here’s a bit about it and our fantastic panel of speakers!

The Time is Now.

We can feel the energy flying about. People are beginning to feel inspired to pursue all that they want, to push themselves forward and to create what they want to see outside the norms of traditional creative practices. The aim of this event is to open up a conversation with each other, to connect with each other in an honest, vulnerable way and also just to bring people together to know that we are all on the same boat! It is an exciting time to be here in Belfast because the creative scene is starting to take off and we want to be a part of that conversation.

Our guest panel will discuss their creative journeys, their struggles, the reality of creating your own career and understanding your own creative process to be valid. We often hear from established designers at talks and forums and we feel that there needs to be a discussion about the beginning of starting your creative journey, the middle of where you are at, finding the balance and understanding that it is okay to be where you are right now! Our panel will include designers from a diverse range of fields and of different ages. The common thread that ties us all together is the hardships of the journey. We just want to open up that conversation and see where it takes us.

Speakers:

Lucy Graham // Freelance Creative // Intern for I AM MODELS

“My name is Lucy Graham, I’m 21 year old, and I’ve just completed my second year of Fashion and Textile design on the Belfast Art College. I intern for IAM models whom I do events management, styling, photography and communications. I guess what you could call a freelance creative. My passion is seeing creatives brought together in Belfast, to push forward to make our city its own place in its own right. To be put on the map as somewhere that people visit because of what is happening NOW. Not what happened in re past.”

Malachy McCrudden // Portrait & Documentary Photographer

Malachy McCrudden is a photographer from Belfast, he graduated with a degree in printmaking in 2012. Malachy has been shortlisted for National Geographic, Magnum and The Royal Photographic Society respectively and work featured in several exhibitions and publications. His work is best described as Documentary and Portraiture and lately his work has been developing in black and white. Malachy is interested in stories, he documents things around him which have a background and a history, his work has heavily been inspired by human rights and the want to be part of a social change.

Currently you will find Malachy packing his bags to head to Russia for the Street Child World Summit, it is with this charity he has travelled across the world and documented the events held in which all the children competing were once homeless. He believes in the power of the media and has long been active in the community both locally and internationally, using his passion for photography to shed a light on human rights violations, poverty, injustice and to encourage legislative change.

Malachy’s work highly emotive and often his images are haunting as well as beautiful, his photographs often are a contrast between the darkest shadows and highlights he creates upon his subject. In the future Malachy will continue his work with homeless children and he is also currently working on a series of portraits of local makers and artists in Belfast who are excelling in their field and inspiring his own practice.

‘Co-founder of Inspire the Sound with a background in fashion construct and print. I’m inspired by simplicity and madness combined and draw my inspiration from our wee city.’

Ronan Lunney // Graphic Designer // Owner of Two Digs Studio

“Through my studio called Two Digs, I am a graphic designer currently living and working in Belfast. Working with clients across various sectors I aim to create effective yet minimal print and digital design. With every project I take on, I always try to break the mould — whether this is through the outcome of the design itself or just by creating something that deviates from the norm. With a plan to continue creating contemporary design, I am also keen to explore more personal projects with this same mind set.”

Aileen McEwen // Painter

“My name is Aileen McEwen and I am a painter and am also pursuing a career in collections care in the heritage sector.
I studied painting at Glasgow School of Art. My paintings are figurative and explore illusion, reality and authenticity. I am also drawn to engage with the connection between femaleness and creativity. I find inspiration in colour, detail and atmospheric spaces, the current revival in figurative painting, and what you all post on Instagram.”
